I would find it more interesting if instead of solving problems the questions would be based on math history/ideas, and whatever else you want to put in there. For example,
A. This symbol stands for the latin for "summa".
Q. What is an integral?

" . " -- sounds like a good proposition.

Would you be interested in heading something like this up?

Or working on the first batch of questions?

Also, what are you thoughts on doing something that combines a little bit of both -- ie history, problem solving, etc... Being able to choose categories like in jeopary...

Also check out these resources!
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/jeopardy.html (make jeopary using tex)

Also this http://www.math.uakron.edu/~dpstory/jj_game.html

Which has this:

I can come up with a few questions (or more appropriately answers).

The reason why I am against using problem solving or any problem which requires thinking is because in real Jeopardy! questions are answered within 5 seconds. Rather concetrate on questions (answers) which can be answered quickly. I had a few ideas what categories we can make it.

History: Stuff about mathematicians lives, and the time period where they lived. Also possibly the history behind some theorem or theory.

Theorems: Post a theorem. And the contestants need to state the name of the theorem. Like for example for $200 you can ask something like \int_a^b f(x) dx = F(b) - F(a) and the question would be, "What is the fundamental theorem of Calculus.

Name the author: Given a name of a famous book in math. The answer would be the name of the author who wrote the book.

Mathematicians: Random things about mathematicians themselves. For example, for $1000, "He can be described as an Italian by birth, German by adoption, and French by choice". (The question would be "Who is Lagrange?").

I am sure you can post other categories also. It just happens to be difficult making it only math. Maybe a little bit of science it okay too. But please! Nothing about movies, celebrities, music, and TV.

Hi All,

I'm testing a jeopardy database program. Please test and let me know if any changes are needed. I will also add another view shortly so that you can see what questions have already been added.

Instructions

1. Add yourself to the list here. This is so when you enter a question it will be linked to you. This is important because if someone questions your answer we know who to turn to. Also, you may need to refresh this screen for your name to show up in the list on the form below. (NOTE: you only need to add your name once, it will then appear in the list).

2. Review the form below. Does it have the category you want?

If so, just start adding the question you want.

If not, click here then refresh your browser (this screen) so that it shows up on the form below! Cool!

3. Oh, and you may want to see if you question has already been entered.... Check here

Sorry! When you said "Question" I assumed you wanted to this Jeopardy! style, i.e. the other way around. What I wrote are the actual responses that you need to say. Can I fix this?

Ah but what about a question like, "Who recites pi to 150 decimal places (incorrectly) in a song called "Pi" on her latest album "Aerial"?"

@ " . ", You can now fix your record, click on the link the shows the questions that people have already entered (@ bullet number 3 above), and select "edit" . Also, I accidently changed the amounts you had set for the questions, so please fix those Sad

@Andy, what category would your question be in? "Popular Math" or "Math Pop" ?

I'm not sure if we can think of enough questions to make it worthwhile, but I like the sound of "Melodious Math" (not to be confused with "Malodorous Math", which stinks).

Actually, your category names would be better, since they include movies & telly as well as music....  I like "Math Pop" more than "Popular Math".  After all, isn't ALL math popular?!?! Smiley

You may be right about this, but I think there is a good deal of stuff out there like the movie pi, proof, beautiful mind just to name a few. Probably lots of songs and books out there (flatland) comes to mind....

It maybe worthwhile to see how many questions we can come for this, then decide later whether there is enough to use in a tournament...

There are at the very least enough famous mathematicians to go around.

I'm curious to see how a "common error" question might look.

I was thinking of things kind of like this:

If sin^2(x) is the same as (sin(x))^2, then what is sin^{-1}(x) equal to?
