Why Not Have The Tata Nano In The US?

The Tata Nano is a rear-engined, four-passenger city car built by Tata Motors, aimed primarily at the Indian market. The car is very fuel efficient, achieving around 78mpg on the highway and around 92 in the city.

The Tata Nano gets better gas mileage then the Honda Prius and costs less than 3k even after it’s been tricked out. However, the chances we’ll see it the US anytime soon is slim because the demand in developing countries will probably outstrip supply for sometime to come, and furthermore, it doesn’t meet US safety standards.

The first reason for the Tata Nano not showing up in the US  I understand. But when it comes to safety standards, I find it funny that we allow people to drive motorcycles which are much more dangerous than even the smallest of cars.

If the Tata Nano were to come to the US it would open up the possibility for many more people to drive who currently can’t. The same goes for developing countries. Some  environmentalists fear that allowing millions of more people to drive who otherwise cannot could put undue stress on the environment. Possibly, but the Nano is more fuel efficient than motorcycles and a lot safer than the current situation that many face.
