Gattaca is Here!

Gattaca, starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, is set in a time where two classes of humans exists: those who were born by chance and those who were not. The latter were selected to have the strongest, smartest, and healthiest genes of both of the parents. This dichotomy created a new form of discrimination where the best jobs went to those who were born genetically superior. And while in the movie it was illegal to discriminate due to genetics, as we would all suspect, that stopped no one from doing so. This scenario in Gattaca is here now. They’ve announced that a baby was tested before conception to weed out the gene for breast cancer. The floodgates are open. It won’t be long before strength and intelligence are tested for as well.

The first baby in the UK tested before conception for a genetic form of breast cancer has been born.Doctors at University College London said the girl and her mother were doing well following the birth this week. The embryo was screened for the altered BRCA1 gene, which would have meant the girl had a 80% chance of developing breast cancer.
