CGIproxy

I was getting tired of not being able to access my email and other non-standard websites from the library since they block all the ports except port 80. So I finally got around to installing CGIproxy which allows me to get around this annoying restriction. It works surprisingly well and it’s fast too. Best of all was the install which took 2 minutes.

I opted to not use any secure shell nonsense. I have nothing that needs encrypting. However, I did putz around with htaccess files which took more time than installing the proxy itself. I didn’t want my proxy to be used by undesirables….

Ideally, I could have found some sort of SMTP proxy so that I could relay my email through port 80, but I couldn’t find any that could be used on a shared host. There are numerous companies that offer this service, but I didn’t feel like paying more than I already do for web services….
