Want better schools? Hire better teachers – The Boston Globe

While agree with Ed Glaeser on many points, I feel that even higher pay for teachers won’t guarantee improvement in schools. There is just too many forces in play to allow schools and teachers to be held unaccountable. I believe the system of public education, as provided by governments is a flawed notion to begin with.

Why do we even need to have public schools? Just because public education is a requirement doesn’t mean the government has to be the provider of those services. The government could give vouchers to parent to allow them to send their kids to private schools that meet certain standards. Schools would be under tremendous pressure to meet standards because if they didn’t parents would not be allowed to use their vouchers to send their children there.

Again, my feeling is the public school system is flawed. Given that it is a bureaucracy, by nature, it is nearly impossible to keep the motivational forces necessary to maintain standards. Sure, while some public schools are top notch, it is not a reasonable expectation that those schools could be duplicated elsewhere. Their success has a lot to do with the student body and active parental involvement which keeps the pressure and heat on them to maintain high standards. Without those two ingredients, which few public schools have, it is nearly impossible, in my opinion to keep the bar high regardless of how much you pay teachers. While some public schools have tested the notion of paying teachers 6 figure salaries is that really scalable?

Privatization — with the government acting as the monitor of standards rather than the purveyor of services — is the only way large scale increases in education achievement will occur while at the same time being cost effective.
