Excel 2007 – How it Closed the Deal

When I first starting playing with excel 2007 I was furious. I couldn’t find a damn thing and I felt like my productivity dropped 50%. I couldn’t find one good reason as to why I should upgrade. It was

  • Terribly slow
  • Hard to find what you were looking for
  • Obtrusive. In that its ribbon bar took up a huge amount of room
  • Difficult to customize

However, I must say, it has definitely grown on me since I’ve had to use it at work. So much so that I actually started contemplating whether I should purchase it for my own machine.

Well, last week, I finally did. What closed the deal? Well, I’ve been working on the this research project and lo and behold it had over 76 thousand records. My old excel 2003 had a 64k limit which meant I couldn’t use it!

But besides the row limit, there were a few other things that helped me find the light. They included:

  • Enhanced pivot tables. I love the filtering and the fact that I can easily make every other row highlighted.
  • Conditional formatting has a slew of cool features. If I have percents that go up and down, I can create cool little arrows showing which direction the trend is heading.
  • They finally decided to add a “remove duplicates” function that is easy to find and use.
  • And a bunch of other little gems that I’ve come to appreciate.
